Young and old met up to share memories at a Plymouth primary school's double Golden Jubilee celebration.

More than 100 people turned up to Knowle Primary School's anniversary day last Thursday (July 11) to celebrate 50 successful years in the school's history, as well as taking a nostalgic walk down memory lane.

Past pupils from 1952 graced the party, as well as former students from every decade up to the present day.

The school had even invited the Queen to the party, but she sent a letter back saying she was unable to attend, wishing them well for the day.

The event is the highlight of the school's year with members of the Parent Staff Association planning the big day and fundraising for almost a year.

Lord Mayor of Plymouth Cllr Ian Gordon marked the occasion by speaking to guests at the party, and representatives from the Local Education Authority also came along to toast the anniversary, including acting chief adviser Rob Pyner and adviser to the school Frances Larner.

Knowle Primary School, in Ringmore Way, was officially opened on July 11, 1952, the same year as the Queen was coronated.

Because this year is Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee, the celebrations added extra significance to the school's special day.

Staff and pupils dressed up in Jubilee-themed fancy dress which went down a storm and entertainment was provided by the Estover Community College Steel Band and pupils from Tamarside Community College.

All of the school's 380 pupils were presented with a commemorative mug, showing the school's crest and the official Golden Jubilee logo.

Andy Payne, deputy headmaster at the school, said: "It was a very successful day and we were incredibly lucky with the good weather. It was very much the highlight of the school's year and lots of parents have since said that it went so well on the day. We are all very pleased.

"It was great to see past pupils right through to present pupils sharing memories of the school and the area. It was also very good to be able to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee as well.

"We were incredibly impressed with the standard of fancy dress and the amount of effort that parents put in to making the day such a success."
