Mount Edgcumbe has an interesting and varied history. There is probably nowhere like it anywhere else in the world. Visitors to the Estate over the years have included Captain Cook, George III, Joshua Reynolds, Dr Johnson and the 18th century actor, David Garrick.

Samuel Pepys, who visited in 1683, described Mount Edgcumbe as 'a most beautiful place as ever was seen.'

Emma Gilbert who was Countess of Edgcumbe had a pet pig called Cupid who dined at the dinner table and accompanied her on trips to London. When he died, Cupid was said to have been buried in a gold casket underneath the Obelisk at Cremyll.

The House and Orangery were bombed during the Second World War and during 1944, the US Army occupied the area around Barn Pool before leaving for Normandy to take part in the D-Day landings.

The Park became very popular during Victorian and Edwardian times and there was a tea room at Lady Emma's Cottage which entertained thousands of visitors. Today, Mount Edgcumbe is just as popular and beautiful as ever. This book covers its history and features many old photos which I hope will be enjoyed by everyone who has an interest and who loves this wonderful place.
