Plymouth Hoe has been a place of entertainment for hundreds of years and in that time its history has been diverse.

Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote about Plymouth Hoe in 1136 when he told the story of Gogmagog.

A chalk giant was cut into the banks of the Hoe until the building of the Citadel in 1665.

The Hoe has experienced much over the years including Drake playing bowls while the Armada approached, the building of Smeaton's Tower, the building of the Pier, the Bandstand, the Camera Obscura, the Belvedere and the Marine Biological Association building, all in the late 1800s.

During the 1930s, the foreshore was developed and the Lido was built.

It proved to be very popular and bands played on the terraces while people swam.

During the Second World War, people famously danced on the Hoe in defiance of the enemy.

This book covers all aspects of the history of the area and I hope it will prove interesting to anyone who loves and enjoys visiting Plymouth Hoe.
